Equalization (EQ) is the process of boosting or cutting specific frequency ranges in an audio signal. It's one of the most-used tools in audio production, essential for mixing, mastering, and sound design.
Types of EQ:
- Parametric EQ — adjustable frequency, gain, and bandwidth (Q) for each band
- Graphic EQ — fixed frequency bands with individual gain sliders
- Shelving EQ — boosts or cuts all frequencies above or below a set point
- High/Low pass filters — remove all content above or below a cutoff frequency
In game audio, EQ is used to simulate distance (rolling off high frequencies), simulate materials (muffling through walls), and ensure sounds sit properly in the mix without frequency masking.
