A free, open-source FM synth that closely models the Yamaha DX7. So basically you get the full DX7 experience inside your DAW — all 144 parameters exposed on a single panel, full sysex compatibility for loading and saving original DX7 and TX7 patches.
The sound engine comes from music-synthesizer-for-android and faithfully replicates original DX7 characteristics. You can switch between multiple engine modes — Modern, Mark I, and OPL Series — each with different bit resolutions and character. Also works as a cartridge librarian, so managing your patch collections is straightforward.
Open source under GPL v3. Has been around for years and has a solid community behind it.
FM synthesis is great for game audio — those bright, metallic, bell-like tones you hear in classic games all come from FM. Dexed gives you access to thousands of existing DX7 patches which is a huge starting point for UI sounds, retro game effects, and musical stingers. The different engine modes (especially OPL Series) can get you closer to that classic game console sound.
